FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• Will this class get me a job?

No, but it will be another tool in your resume toolkit. If you are looking for work in Nevada, this class will prepare you to take the Nevada state test administered by OSHA to license photovoltaic workers for solar projects.

• Will I be certified?

The solar Institute of Nevada, LLC will issue a certificate of completion of a 40 hour entry level photovoltaic course upon the student's receiving a passing grade. The course also covers the material necessary for the student to take the North American Board of Certified Energy Practioners entry level certificate test.

• What are the differences between grid-tie, stand alone, and hybrid solar systems?

A grid-tie system is connected to the utility grid through the home distribution panel and will put excess power onto the grid. A stand alone system is not connected to the utility grid. It powers local loads and may charge up a battery bank. A hybrid system is a stand alone system with more than one power source, i.e. solar and wind or solar and generator or wind and micro-hydro, etc.

• How much does a solar system cost?

The cost depends on a complex set of factors. This course is designed to help the layman to identify and cost out those factors.

• How safe are photovoltaic systems?

Solar arrays and systems are just like any other electrical systems, and as long as they are installed to code by qualified technicians or electricians, they are safe.
Grades and Successful Completion

The course is operated on a pass/fail basis. Passing the course is achieved by receiving a grade of 70% or greater on each of the five daily exams. Receiving less than 70% on any daily exam constitutes unsatisfactory progress and failure of the course.

The labs are also pass/fail with a pass being the student demonstrating to the instructor the proper use of the instrumentation and safety equipment and the successful assembly of the full size photovoltaic system by the whole class.

A student is allowed to retake an exam, by appointment, to improve a test score. Students with an excused absence may take a make-up exam. A failed student is allowed to retake the course one time.

Placement in a job or a passing grade on any certification exam is not guaranteed nor promised as a result of successful completion of this course.

This course does not fulfill the required OSHA 10/30 class required of contractors and construction workers in the state of Nevada.
